The Trollhätte Locks

The Trollhätte Canal stretches from Vänersborg to Gothenburg. The canal was opened in 1800 and has been rebuilt and extended several times since then.

There are a total of six locks at the falls in Vargön, Trollhättan and Lilla Edet, and the Trollhätte locks are Sweden’s highest locks with a fall height of 32 metres. There are three parallel lock channels and the final lock system, which was built in 1916, is still in use today.

The locks of the Trollhätte Canal set the standard for the dimensions of other locks. The locks that were built in the Göta Canal were therefore not allowed to diverge from the length, breadth or depth of those on the Trollhätte Canal.

The cruises lasting four and six days between Stockholm and Gothenburg pass through Trollhättan. Since the lock process takes quite some time, you can disembark and experience the process from dry land, and there is also time to stroll around Trollhättan and visit the Trollhätte Canal Museum.
