An inland location was chosen as a safe haven to which the royal family, government and gold reserves could be moved in the event of an attack. Situating the fortress on the Göta Canal proved therefore to be natural and practical.
The community of Karlsborg grew up around the fortress. It originally consisted mainly of houses for the fortress personnel, but the community expanded into a town due to the Göta Canal, which passes through Karlsborg.
The fortress is an impressive building that took 90 years to complete. With a 5-km perimeter and an area equivalent to 170 football pitches, it forms one of the largest constructions in Europe.
On the four-day cruise between Gothenburg and Stockholm we visit this fortress and can enjoy a guided tour that is adventurous to say the least.
