Drottningholm Palace

The royal family's permanent home can be found not far from Stockholm city on the beautiful island Lovön in lake Mälaren. The Castle premises includes the Chinese Pavilion a pleasure palace with Oriental elements, the Guard tent in the form of a Roman soldier's tent, the unique Drottningholm Theatre and a fantastic park.

The Castle
The World Heritage Drottningholm is a magnificent building as well the best preserved royal palace from the 1600s.

The castle was built after French examples and the Palace of Versailles was a great inspiration to the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder who, on behalf of Queen Hedvig Eleonora, built the castle.

The royal family moved from Stockholm Castle out to Drottningholm Palace in 1981 and today our King and Queen live in the southern wing.

The Castle Park
The park consists of a number of different gardens, lovely to visit all year round.

The Baroque garden unfolds in front of the castle and is the oldest part of the park.

The English Park, with its large lawns and shady trees is a popular picnic spot for visitors. North of the English park the orangery is situated.
