Vaxholm

In 2009 there were 12 cafés, 21 restaurants, 11 galleries and no less than 45 different accommodation alternatives in Vaxholm. It's no wonder that the city is called the capital of the Archipelago.

After a quick survey among my acquaintances, I realise that most have never visited Vaxholm, a surprising discovery and an incentive to writing this article.

Vaxholm and its neighbourhood have a long history behind it. Vikings lived in the area a thousand years ago and today Vaxholm boasts such celebrities as Börje Salming and Ingemar Stenmark. The Municipality of Vaxholm consists of 64 islands however there is much to discover during a visit and everywhere you are close to water.

Summer is that time of year that Vaxholm comes alive with life and movement. As a boat traffic intersection of the middle archipelago and northern archipelago, there are always lots of boats in the harbour and ice-cream-eating holiday-makers wandering around. Devote yourself to the idyllic archipelago and stroll around awhile in the central parts of Vaxholm. Visit Vaxholm's church and sit down for a cup of coffee at a café or take a look at the local art at one of the city's galleries.

If you feel like swimming, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. Norrhamnen is a small swimming spot with both a beach and cliff rocks right in the city core of Vaxholm. After a dip in the sea, I recommend a visit to Vaxholm's Citadel and Bistro. The citadel was built by Gustav Vasa and there is a lot of interesting history to find out about at the fort museum.

On certain Saturdays during the summer you can also visit Badholmen where different bands play. Here there is a small beach, a bar and a restaurant. On pretty summer evenings the mood is always at its peak and it almost feels as if you are abroad.

Finally, I would like to encourage everyone who has not yet visited Vaxholm to take some time and make a trip to this treasure. You will certainly not regret it!
