Fortress History

New Alvsborgs Fort has an astounding history that stretches all the way from it's origin in the 17th century to modern time. At three occasions the Danish stood by the door - with everything but good intentions - they were however forced to sail away without succes all three times.

During the time as a fort prison, some of Sweden's most feared criminals were held captive on the island. In the late 1800s the Fort became a destination for people of Gothenburg who wanted to breathe fresh ocean-air, smoke a cigarr, and drink punch.

At Stromma, we are proud to be able to share what we think is one of Sweden's biggest and best preserved cultural heritages. To your left, you can read a few of the great stories about Alvsborgs Fortress - but the best way to experience the Fortress is in person - Commandant Krok wishes you welcome!
