Warnskiold faught in the Thirty years war and was nobled in 1646. In 1644 Warnskiold got a mission from the magistrate in Gothenburg to prepare plans for the defence of Gota alvs opening. In August of 1653 he finished the blueprints for the Fort, and the construction began under management of the architecht himself. He worked on the construction of Elfsborg until his death in 1674.
Dahlberg took part in several wars until the year 1660 when he was nobled. He worked closely with Karl XI, who in 1679 announced him head of fortification administrations. After Warnskiold's death Dahlberg took over the responsibility for finishing Elfsborgs Fort. Among his other buildings the redoubts Kronan and Lejonet in Gothenburg, Dalarö redoubt, and Varbergs Fort can be mentioned.
John Abraham Lillie was depute commandant at New Elfsborg in 1719, when the regular commandant Gadde travelled to Medevi health resort. Lillie was an experienced warrior who participated in campaigns both in Germany and Norway. During the battle in 1719, it was much because of his effort we managed to save the fort from the strong danish Tordenskiold.
Both songs and poems were written, praising Lillie and his men. The commandant was even honored with a saying; "The danish pick no swedish Lillies".
In 1814 major Krook became commandant of Elfsborgs Fort. At this time, the number of prisoners had increase far over one hundred, and the military importance decreased substantially.
Krook was the commandant who by far served the longest of all Elfsborg's commandants, he resigned in 1843. Although he is most famous for his silly way of thinking and expressing himself.
For example, Krook started a shoe-making company, where he sold the shoes much cheaper then they cost to manufacture. Many asked how this company was supposed to survive. Krook calmed them with the words:- It is the quantity that does it!
Von Qvanten took over after Krook in 1843, and soon regarded Elfsborg as his own private kingdom. He is infamous for his violent temper, and put people whom he did not care for in confinement. He would arrange ball's, where he took the chance to play Don Juan. People were afraid to say what they thought about him, in fear of being put in confinement.
