Tärnaby - where stars are born

If there is one place in Sweden that has fostered successful skiers, it’s Tärnaby. Stars such as Ingemar Stenmark, Anja Pärsson (that both have slopes named after them), Stig Strand and Jens Byggmark have sweated on these slopes.

Tärna IK Fjällvinden is the name of the club that seems to be able to draw out that little extra from its skiers. Some feel that the club is probably the most successful alpine ski club in the world. With their 123 World Cup wins, 3 Olympic gold medals and 10 World Championship victories in the bag since its start in 1929, it is difficult to say otherwise.

What then, is so special about Tärnaby?
Here, there is naturally great enthusiasm for the sport, self-confidence in spades and very fine slopes to train on. Tärnaby can boast of having two of Sweden's best pistes for training and competing - the legendary Anja Slope and the mythical Ingemar Slope. The Ingemar and Anja slopes attract both Sweden's and USA's national team to pre-season training since the season begins already in November.

You may ask if ordinary skiers are also welcome - and they are! While Tärnaby has slopes for daredevils, there are also a number of blue and red pistes and the close vicinity of Hemavan's child-friendly slopes offer a lot of skiing for your money.

It is most comfortable to stay at the Tärnaby Fjäll Hotel. It is close to the slopes from here and the hotel even has a panorama sauna on its roof.

A favourite quote from Ingmar Stenmark: "I don't know anything about luck, only that the more I train, the more luck I have."
