Malmö

A friendly town with pleasant people and lots to see

Will you be passing through Malmö this summer? Here are a few tips for how you can spend a day in this pleasant town. From there you can continue on to the Ribersborg beach, also called “Ribban”, and cool off with a dip in the sea.

If the weather is good, you can start the day with a sightseeing tour by boat on Malmö’s canals. You can view the town from the water with the sea breeze in your hair. This is a fun and pleasant outing that is also informative. The guides know what they are talking about and you can always learn something new.

Rent a bicycle from the same place you leave the boat and you can then explore the town on your own. Cycle around the old town and see Lilla Torg (Little Square) and Gamla Väster (Western Old Town) with small picturesque houses jammed in between larger, more modern buildings. Lilla Torg is known for its open-air restaurants and cafés so take the opportunity to enjoy a coffee in the sun.

Continue on towards the Western Harbour (Västra Hamnen) and witness the impressive Turning Torso and the other architecturally interesting buildings in the area. If you would like to take a walk, you can park your bicycle and walk alongside the wooden deck enjoying the view of the Sound.

Ribban is a 3-km-long beach with shallow waters that are suitable for all the family. Here you can also find open-air swimming baths with a spa, a café and a restaurant.

If the weather is cloudy or rainy, you can take the opportunity to see Malmö from the peace and quiet of a sightseeing bus. The red sightseeing buses depart from Norra Vallgatan opposite Central Station.

If you desire to go shopping, you can visit the shopping streets of Södergatan and Södra Förstadsgatan. Window-shop or browse through the small boutiques with everything from design articles to health foods and second-hand items. If you prefer shopping malls, you will find Triangeln (Triangle mall) not far from the square called Gustav Adolfs Torg. This is a large mall with the all the main shops normally found in such malls.

Round off the day with a cold beer and a generous dinner at Paddy’s, a lively Irish pub with live music at weekends. You can find this pub close to Stortorget (Large Square) on Kalendegatan 7.
