The good life on board

Our 3-day weekend trip between Söderköping and Töreboda lets you enjoy the best in life while cruising on the Göta Canal.

On special weekends in May, July and August the M/S Diana sails from Töreboda to Söderköping or back. On these cruises, the culinary and geographic journeys are of equal importance. Thus our menus are composed of the seasonal offerings of local suppliers along the canal. Klanghamns Fish is one of our culinary partners, providing such specialities as Lake Vättern char, smoked lavaret and crayfish. As we pass Norsholm we stop off to fetch items from Britta and Lennart’s locally produced range of cured meats and provisions. And breakfast would not be the same without a selection of Brunneby marmalades and jams to spread on bread from the Slåttergubben Sourdough Bakery.

These trips also include special performances that include tasting carefully chosen drinks of other delicacies. You need only enjoy and feel welcome aboard the M/S Diana.

South African wines with the janake wine group – May 21-23, 2010

An incomparable opportunity to meet vintner De Wet Viljonen from the Neethlingshof Estate in South Africa who has come to Sweden to share his know-how. On this trip the focus is on classic grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, but we will also become acquainted with Gewurztraminer and Malbec. This trip is a must for anyone wishing broader information about South African wines.

Alsace wines with the janake wine group – July 10-12, 2010

The Leon Beyer vineyard has brought us many well-known, well-tasting wines. Together with several connoisseurs thoroughly versed in this classic wine district, we will explore wines with a markedly dry, flavourful style holding the highest class. Wines from the Beyer vineyard are often found in the cellars of some of the highest ranked restaurants in France.

Amarone wines with the janake wine group – August 13-15, 2010

Some people consider Amarone the Rolls Royce of wine. This trip will host Gianni Righetti from the Luigi Righetti vineyard, one of the most important producers. Together with the wine doyen Janåke Johansson from the janake wine group, he will share the secrets behind this noble beverage. It will indeed be a most unusual wine tasting – book your place for a sure cruise reservation.

Swedish whisky and high-class cognac with Mackmyra and the janake wine group – August 27-29 and September 10-12, 2010

When love persuaded Norwegian Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen to settle in the Cognac district, Scandinavians gained yet another superb beverage, namely the classic Bache-Gabrielsen Cognac. Our cicerone from the janake wine group guides us through an exciting tasting. As a bonus we will be joined by Mackmyra’s Eric Bräck who will present one of Sweden’s greatest beverage successes since Absolut Vodka and let you taste it, as well.

Stellenbosch and Stellenzicht from South Africa with the janake group – September 3-5, 2010

Of world-class fame, vintner Guy Webber makes one of his rare appearances in Sweden. While there is no space here to list his awards and nominations, it is the fantastic balance of his wines and his ability for creating top-level wines from the Syrah and Semillion Reserve grapes that have brought him renown. Join us and partake of the fantastic beverages created by this master.

Health & SPA trip with ecologic wines – July 13-15 and August 20-22, 2010

This journey is a new turn for those wishing to combine the peace on board a classic canal boat with some massage and movement. The evenings will feature ecologic wines from the janake wine group. Håkan Gullberg from the Rederi Göta Kanal will discuss the reasons why these wines have become so popular and what makes them different from traditionally produced wines. There will be massage on board led by physical therapist Elisabeth Ericson, as well as longer bicycle tours along the Long Canal in Östergötland province and aerobics at the Berg Locks one of the mornings. Truly a cruise offering harmony for both body and soul.

All meals are included in the price and are served in the elegantly laid dining room. Even the beverage tastings are included in the price.

Bus back to the departure port is also included.

Other highlights of the trip include:

  • The nine locks of the two-kilometre Dufkullen-Mariehov-Carlsborg passage.
  • Optional tour to Vreta Cloister, Sweden’s first convent.
  • Karlsborg Fortress built on the initiative of the man who built the canal, namely Baltzar von Platen.
  • Billströmman and Spetsnäskanalen – two of the canal’s narrowest passages.
