About the canal

Göta canal is the greatest building project throughout the Swedish history.

58 000 soldiers helpt build the canal, a job that lasted from 1810 to 1832.

Baltzar von Platen was the man who made the canal building project possible, helping him was Thomas Telford, one of the best canal instructors in Europe at the time.

The idea of a canal across southern Sweden was firs presented 1516 by bishop Hans Brask. It would take as long as 300 years until the plans were concretized.
