Lilla Bommen

Lilla Bommen is Gothenburg’s central guest marina. If you follow the main street Avenyn to the north until it becomes Östra Hamngatan (East Harbour Street) and then continue north, you will come at last to Lilla Bommen. The marina was completed in 1860, although it is said that the harbour itself has existed since as early as 1640.

Three things you cannot miss when you are at Lilla Bommen are:

Barken Viking (The Barque Viking)

The Viking is the largest sailing vessel ever built in Scandinavia. Constructed in Copenhagen, she was launched on 1st December 1906, and since 1994 she has remained moored at Gullbergskajen (Gullberg Quay) at Lilla Bommens Torg (Little Boom Square).

Since 1966, when the Älvsborg Bridge was built, she has in effect been held hostage in the harbour. The Viking’s tallest mast reaches higher than the span of the bridge, so it is impossible for her to take to the seven seas without destroying her masts.

Today the ship is owned by a real-estate company and operations on board are run by Liseberg; the ship is used as a hotel, conference centre and restaurant.

Läppstiftet (Lipstick)

Those we love the most go by many names, and this building is particularly close to the hearts of everyone in Gothenburg. The building is also known as Skanskaskrapan (The Skanska Scraper), Vattenståndet (The Height of Tide), and its official name, although the least known, is actually Lilla Bommen, after its geographical location.

At the top of the building there is a café – Götheborgsutkiken (The Gothenburg Lookout) – where you can view the whole city, its surroundings and the harbour.

Göteborgsoperan (The Gothenburg Opera)

You cannot miss the Opera House if you are close to Lilla Bommens Torg (Square). It is an impressive building and you can almost make out the silhouettes of ships’ hulls, wind-filled sails, bridges and harbour cranes in the architecture of the building.

The stagecraft at the Gothenburg Opera is among the most advanced in the world and a great deal of work has been undertaken to produce the best possible acoustics in the halls.
